Warfare

The Frankish lands are spared of the scourge of war no more than the rest of Ymirea.

Sources of Conflict

Full-scale territorial wars between different states are perhaps the least common kind of conflict. The balance of power between the Confederacy of Sorcerours and the Grand Kingdom of Clemencia is fine-grained, and they will invariably take an interest in any such war.

Internal power struggles are common, whether fought for the succession of a throne, the distribution of power between king and noblemen, or for economical resources.

Rebellions break out frequently. The lower classes, distressed with their lot in life and protesting against taxes and laws which they deem unfair, rise up against the rule of nobles and magistrates. After their militia has succeeded in killing off some of these, they are invariably suppressed with great brutality by noblemen and soldiery. Ironically, some rebellions break out because of the hardships inflicted by resident mercenaries, or in protest against having to lodge soldiers in private homes.

An additional motivation for warfare is the fact that both nobles and commoners regard it as one of the most promising sources of social and economical advancement (see "The Spoils of War", below). Nobles justify their rule by being the best fighters and "protecting" the commoners, while commoners may retire as wealthy men if they only survive a few years as mercenaries.
