Generosity

The Law of Generosity compels one to give, to accept, and to return a gift.

This rule is so universal that many consider it one of the natural laws which structure the universe.

All free people should endeavour to be generous to those they desire good relationships with.

Friendships, alliances, marriages, pacts, all should be sealed with an exchange of gifts. Good fortune should be shared.

To be greedy and take without giving in turn, or to be miserly and refrain from both giving and receiving, are both contemptible behaviours.

Profiteering

The emphasis on generosity makes many kinds of business and trade highly questionable. One of the things that render the estateless merchants, and the sordid mercenaries, so contemptible to decent folk, is that rather than to give and receive freely as men of honour, they calculate and scheme, trying to get the best deal.

Esoteric aspects

Generosity also has an esoteric side. To give aught to, or receive aught from, a sorcerer, creates a bond between you and him. In general, it is thought unsafe to have any bond with a sorcerer, and in particular to be indebted to him, or to give him anything from or strongly connected with oneself.

Sacral

The power of the donation reaches higher spheres. Gods and spirits are also considered to be bound by the laws of the gift. Sacrifices help repay the obligation one has to benevolent forces for their goodness, and may create an obligation in malicious entities to give one less than their worst.

The Free Kingdoms are the part of Cargandom that adhere most strongly to the laws of generosity.

A person who receives from anothermore than he returns , may find himself owing a Favour, or even a Duty, to his benefactor.
