The University
(of Professors and Sophists)

The guild of teachers and professors is often known as The University, particularily in the west, though this Cargan term originally denoted any guild.

The University claims as its guild right to teach literacy and academic subjects for pay, and to live by one's academic knowledge in one fashion or another (as an astrologer, physician or lawyer).

The mark of a member of the University is a flattened, square tam (mortarboard), usually worn with a scholar's robe. The traditional university armament is the mace.

A university student may advance to the level of candidate when he is fully literate and has mastered the Trivium (see sidebar) skills at level 10+.

To advance to the level of Magister, a Candidate must know Philosophy at level 11+, one of the skills of his Universal at 12+, and the other two at 11+, as well as Teaching and Writing at 9+,

To dispute for the title of Doctor in one of the four fields, a Magister must known Philosophy at level 12+, one of his doctoral skills at 14+, and the other two at 12+.

It is notably simpler to get a Doctor degree in Law than in the other three universals, and for this reason Law students are considered to be lazy, superficial and profit-oriented by other academics.

The University has unusually mobile members, as many travel from town to town to find fitting employment. To ensure that the guild receives its dues and maintains its monopoly, the University enforcers travel the land. Enforcers are mostly candidates (or even students) who lack the academic acumen (or determination) to advance in other fashion within the University. Their bitterness is put to use by the deans in bludgoning other academics.
