Games and Gambling

Gambling is widespread in all social layers. The most common is dice games, and the most popular games are hazard and passage.

Second come board games. Among the most popular are checkers and nine-men's-morris. Chess is very popular in the upper classes, and in all social layers of the Confederacy.

Card games are also quite popular, but mostly among the gentry, as a deck of card costs a bit of money.

Games are usually played for a wager, though this is not as common with board games as with the cards and dice. Betting is also a popular form of gambling. Beastfights, fencing, boxing and wrestling matches, tennis matches, tournaments, battles, romances, the weather - all are fair game. Bets may be in cash or other valuables.
