Dionysus, Dagan, Great God Pan. The god of the wilderness. The god of wildness. Savagery and ecstacy are the province of Dionysus. His lot in Cosmos is all that lingers or strays near to the primordeal Chaos whence came Cosmos.
The nymphs and satyrs are the children and courtiers of Dionysos.
Dionysos dies and is reborn with the turning of every year, his scattered ashes are the embers of immortality in every man and woman. His cult promises eternal life to those who partake of his flesh and blood.
Dionysus's cult is only remotely interested in Order and Chaos, and find the concepts of good and evil entirely devoid of interest.
The city dwellers, worshipping Dionysus as the god of ecstacy and rebirth, usually portray him as a handsome youth with vines in his hair, followed by maenads, satyrs and nymphs. In a more savage aspect, he is the Horned god, an ageless man with the horns of a stag or a goat. In his aspect as Herne, the leader of the Wild Hunt, he is horned and followed by a great pack of canines.
The worship of Dionysus tends to be only vaguely institutionalized and involves much intoxication, dancing, sexuality and violence.
