The Brides are a monastic order admitting only virgin women of noble (Status 2+, non-bourgeois) birth as full members. Common women may serve as lay sisters in this order, serving as handmaidens to the Brides, performing menial tasks and filling out the choir.
The Brides wear tight-fitting habits of scarlet cloth that cover them from chin to toe, as well as white shawls and small round caps.
Brides of Jupiter must refrain from all carnal or even physical contact with mortal males. Having sexual relations with a mortal man carries the penalty of death by exposure. Violating a Bride is punished by hanging and burning.
The Brides spend most of their time secluded in their monasteries, singing and praying, and meditating on the glory and potency of Jupiter.
The Brides of Jupiter seek ecstatic spiritual union with their deity. With true exaltation, this union may even grow physical (they claim), yielding superhuman offspring. The opponents of the order claim that such miraculous births are more a matter of broken vows and brilliant rhetoric.
