A hulking man, more than six feet tall, broad-shouldered and strong hipped, his broad neck leads up to a lantern jaw and a square face. Paulus is of pure Cargan stock, olive-skinned and dark-haired. He is clean-shaven and keeps his hair cropped short.
Paulus Varro's armaments are eccentric to say the least - he wears Cargan scale armour - lorica segmentata, and carries a large shield designed like a scutum, with the leonine sun on its shield boss, but crafted out of iron. Enormously heavy, but carried with reasonable ease by the powerful Cargan. He also bears a sword in a blue enamel scabbard, the blade of which has been shown to be black as melted tar. He calls it the Devilblade.
Paulus is a sergeant of some renown, but seems unlikely to be considered for higher position, being a commoner, and more well supplied with brawns than with brain. He commands a squad of swordmen, whom were somewhat reduced in the attack on les Tourelles south of Vádère.
Paulus Varro seems bluff, lacking in refinement but with ample courage. He is very proud of the Cargan race, culture and emprie, and takes references to sodomy and zoophilia extremely poorly.
He smokes a waterpipe in camp, and has also been known to smoke cylinders of dried leaves of unknown provenance on special occasions.
