Alum: Found in alunite and alum shale whence it is extracted by various processes. Alum is very important, used (as a mortant) in dying textiles and (for sizing) in paper manefacture. It is also used to reduce offensive odors, and in medicine as an astringent (to close wounds).
Clay: A kind of stone infused with water.
Coalstone (stone coal): A kind of stone richly infused with the element of fire.
Cornite (hornstone): This very rare mineral is in its nature totally magic resistant. Cornite is usually ground down and forged into steel, bronze or lead to create metal objects which are highly resistant to magic.
Salt is the seed of order. It is very important for preserving food, and there is a flourishing salt trade. Salt crystals are aversive to Chaos, but salt water has no such effect.
Soupstone (nutrite): This mineral ranges from amber to sandstone in colour, and is usually honey-coloured. It is opaque and glossy, slightly mallable and fractures easily if struck hard. Soupstone is remarkable in that it is edible, and nutritious to plants and animals alike. To be eaten, soupstone should be ground into flour and mixed into dough and baked, or boiled for a long time. It has a strong, bitter taste which takes some time to get used to. Most races find a soupstone-heavy diet to be nauseating over time, but dwarves can subsist on it almost indefinitely (although even the coarse dwarven palates prefer a more varied diet). A thin infusion of soupstone tastes somewhat tea-like. Polished soupstone jewelry is cheap, but should be eaten quickly or polished often lest it grows mouldy. Soupstone is normally found encased in harder stone deposits, as exposed soupstone is quickly eroded by roots and rain...
Gemstones
Curines are jet black gemstones, hard as diamond, and just as valuable.
Escarbuncles are the greatest of gemstones, even curines and diamonds pale by comparison. Escarbuncles are incadescent white, shining with a light of their own, and reflecting all light with increased intensity.
Toadstones are not mined, but rather extracted from the heads of old toads, by certain esoteric means. They glow when they come close to poison.
