Neither apes nor monkeys are native to Cargandom, but stories of them reach the realm from Cargandom and the Occident.
Sages and sailors alike are puzzled whether these should be considered a sentient (possibly even cultured) race (of the dactyli, most likely), or rather a family of clever animals.
These hairy humanoids have hands instead of feet. They are clever but mute. Some are reputed to grow to great size and ferocity. It is said that the apes have kingdoms in the deep forests of the south, whence they make war on the sciapodae.
Reputedly found in the forests of the Occident, particularily on the islands in its south, the choromandae are great apes clad in matted red body hair, with pale eyes like ghosts and a slightly melancholy appearance.
Small hairy men with the heads of hounds, they have occationally been observed in the company of elves. Some say that they are men magically altered by elves, not a true race. Others say that they come from the spice islands far to the west.
