Dactyli

Dwarves (Dactylus Troglodytes)

Dwarves are a short and stocky race. They are strong and crudely built, hairy and smelly. Dwarves are known to be silent, shy and suspicious.

Dwarves avoid strong light, living in subterran locales, and preferring night to day.

Dwarves are known as fierce and belligerent, bloodthirsty and monstrously strong, and there have been several wars between dwarves and men.

Dwarves are master miners and builders, and are also supreme smiths. When humans have dealings with dwarves, it is out of a desire to acquire the fruits of their skill.

Mostly dwarves keep to themselves, in hidden halls under the hills and mountains. However, they come forth to acquire foodstuffs, texiles, charcoal and other goods that cannot be had underneath.

Some urban areas have dwarven quarters, where dwarfish merchants and craftsmen deal with humans, shipping home the softer goods they receive in payment.

Gnomes (Dactylus Gnomus)

Gnomes are the smallest race, little black-skinned, pale-haired creatures half the height and strength of a human, and a third of the mass. Gnomes have large heads with impish features and big noses, and large hands and feet.

The great majority of are quiet and inconspicious. Often they are mistaken for children. Gnomes are quiet and unassuming workers. Gnomes keep themselves to themselves, but many work for humans or dwarves. Some gnome families make dens at human farms, helping with chores in return for food and shelter; It is considered good fortune to have a gnome-den on one's farm.

Whereever gnomes go, they go in groups, or pairs at the very least. When one sees a lone gnome, one should look for the others.

A lone gnome is probably a noisy gnome. Noisy gnomes talk loudly (and usually nasally), they wear loud clothes, brag a lot and generally seem to attempt to make up for the fact that the gods created them small.
