Monoceratidae

Monocerotidae are thought to be relatives of horses, as their bodies are basically similar (with the exception of the rhinoceroi), despite their many differences. Monoceroi have cloven hooves, tufted tails and horns jutting from the centre of their heads. Most monoceroi have a single, curved horn, but the unicorn and the serracorn have staight horns, and the Ifrikian rhinoceros has two horns, one behind the other.

Apart from the unicornicula, all the monoceratidae share a bad temperament and a intrepid pugnacity. They are untamable, and shy away even from the company of their own kin.

Unicorn: A fully grown unicorn has a twisted horn longer than a man's leg jutting from its forehead. Apart from this, its cloven hooves and a sinuous tail ending in a tuft of hair, it is quite horse-shaped, though relatively heavier in the chest, and altogether more lithe in shape. Its hide is the colour of moonstone, with glittering motes like diamond dust spread all over, while the mane, feathering and tail-tuft shines like mother-of-pearl.

Unicornicula: Unicorniculae are diminutive relatives of the unicorns, scarcely larger than a roe deer. They have small, curved horns and short tails. Their coloration is much like that of unicorns. Unlike all other monoceratidae, they are not belligerent, though they shy away from the company of all humans save female virgins. While not entirely extinguished from this world by the gods, unicorniculae are thought to be quite rare.

Serraceros: Unlike most other monoceroi, the serraceros is a social animal, living in herds. It is found to the south of the Omphalic Desert. The serraceros gets its name from its horn, which is flattened, and serrated at the sides, like a flamberge sword; The serraceros charges and impales with its horn, but if held at bay attacks by swinging its head from side to side, slashing with the serrated edges. The serraceros's hide is striped in the colours of brass and ebony.

Rhinoceroi are found to the south. This gigantic monoceros is less swift than any of its relatives. The rhinoceros heavy-set and tough-skinned, the size of a bull or larger. Their tails are short and their horns are curved. Some have just one horn, others a second horn behind the first. Rhinoceroi are found in Ifrikia and Azanay.

Kerakon, the substance of the horns of the monocerotidae, is a a panacea and a potent aphrodisiac.

While it is considered very good for one's health to have a whole horn of kerakon near, it must be ground and taken internally to unleash its spectacular curative powers.

Since the disappearance of the monoceratidae from Cargandom, kerakon is only obtainable from the lands of the sciapodae.

White kerakon obtained from the unicorn horn is considered superior to black and brown kerakon, gained from rhinoceros and serraceros, respectively. Black kerakon, got from rhinoceroi, is both the most common and the least potent kind.
