Birds

Courier crows (no: bodkråker) are domestically bred messenger birds. They are cunning creatures. Courier crows are usually given notes to carry to a recipient, but some can remember and repeat up a dozen words. They are tended to by Crowkeepers, whom tell them where to go.

Mournerbirds are small, black birds with white facial markings and short, sharp beaks. Their feet and beaks are grey. Mournerbirds are drawn to fresh corpses, they cover them modestly with leaves, and drink of their blood as payment. The mournerbird's call is like a human whistling.

Owls bring omens of death. They are not associated with wisdom.

Ravens are sacred animals. They are held in particular reverence by the priesthoods of Anu, Ereshkigal and Isthar. Ravens are wise and some of them know a bit of human language.

Roosters are the enemies of ghosts, their cockcrow drive evil spirits away.

Wrybeaks are found along the Shattered Coast, and out over the Lost Souls' Ocean. They are rare along the Shattered Coast, and even more scarce further from the ocean. Wrybeaks resemble crows, but are larger than ravens, and have prodigous, sharp beaks and large, curved claws on their feet. There is a twist to the beak of the wrybeak which gives it the appearance of mirth. Its call is like braying laughter, as well. Wrybeaks are birds of carrion, but are not above a bit of fresh meat. It is said that they even attack humans on occasion.
