Naamlanda

The Land

This is not a nation, but rather an region compromising many realms, which all lie at the northern reaches of the Shattered Coast, are subarctic in climate, and have been settled by Fraegings. Some of Naamlanda are part of three Fraeging kingdoms (of which Ljuvmark are the greatest), most of the rest is part of free earldoms, other parts are the holdings of lesser, independent nobles, and some exist in a state approximating both democracy and anarchy.

The Naamlanda region is very coast-oriented, most of it is nested between mountains and sea, and much of it is hidden in long, narrow fjords. The climate is harsh and wet, with long, cold and dark winters, and short, cool and bright summers. The predominant trees are birch and conifers.

The Folk

The people of Naamland have a reputation as somewhat primitive, a bit dim-witted, and rather violent, though not as bad as the Carrancochers. It is generally agreed (particularily among the Naamlendings themselves) that they are valourous and freedom-loving. They speaks Naamlandic, a Fraeging language unrelated to all other languages along the Shattered coast, save for Dorannic, which has been somewhat influenced by Naamlandic.

The Naamlendings make their living by farming and fishing, many combine the two. They have close relationship with the sea, which leads to profitable merchantry and even more profitable piracy (which is also in keeping with the Naamlandic love for battle).

Foreigners and non-humans

The Naamlands are a fairly cosmopolitan area, in their own fashion. In the ports, there are merchants from many other lands, even some from such distant lands as the Cargan Empire and Haram. These foreigners are drawn here by the profits to be made buying fish, birds' down, oil and meat from whales as well as furs and pelts of various kinds. They sell wine, fine cloth and various other cultured products which the Naamlending prize.

More important than these foreign arrivals, however, are the nonhuman neighbours of the Naamlendings. Not only do the Fraegings get along better with the dwarves and ogres than any other human race, but in the Naamlands they have also been able to establish some sort of half-decent relationship with the goblin races. It is not so much that the goblins do not raid the Naamlendings, as the fact that the Naamlendings cheerfully reciprocate. The Naamlendings also take raiding in a stride, seeing the goblin raids as little different from those of neighbouring mini-states. Also, the goblins here seem to have curtailed their love for human flesh - ransom and slavery is profitable enough to drive the price of human meat up, presumably.
