Senion

Senion is an island kingdom to the west of the Mare Interior. Senion consists of the island of Senion itself , the island of Virac and several minor islands to the southern and western side of the land. The terrain ranges from high cliff and sandy beaches along the coast to rolling hills and grassy plains further inland. There are minor areas of forests in the interior of the country, but they are goblin-infested and the trees yield weak wood, little suited for ship-building.

The Senine people are somewhere between Clementians and Avatines in general build and complexion, tending to be dark-haired and olive-skinned. They speak Occidental Frankish (Clementian). The Senines are stereotypically seen as being avaricious and cowardly, having bent to goblin, Cargan, Dorannian, Clementian, Avatine and Confederacy invaders in their time.

Senines live in concentrated settlements, ranging from small thorps and hamlets, to great cities along the coast. Houses are equally often made of stone, brick, wattle-and-daub and wood, and the roofs are usually thatched or covered in wooden shingles. All major settlements except Forpolis are situated along the coast. There are few overland roads, and none of them are paved. There are also no rivers suitable as waterways.

The capital of Senion, Edarina, has long been a city of art, as its rulers and wealthy burgers have been quite eager to support gifted artists. There are many famous artworks to be found in the city, most well known are the celebrated statue of Hermes and the Maiden with Dolphins bronze sculpture. The city is home to the Edarinan Academy (founded ca 6100). The Edarinan Exchange is a stock exchange, partially modelled on the Bazar of Caranbar. The fine artworks and riches seen in the affluent part of the city contrast strongly with the squalid tenements found in the foulburg.

The Senines have always been a mercantile people. Their share of the Shattered Coast's merchant shipping has waxed over the last decade, as the Avatines' have waned.

Senion is particularily famous for its fine glasswares. While the Confederation may export cheaper goods, the Senine wares are known to be both of better quality, and untainted by magic.

The country is ruled by Raquelia, the Maiden Queen, who is famed for her beauty. She has also gradually become acknowledged as quite shrewd, as she came into power after her father died suddenly of a cardiac arrest, and has been able to stay in power for several years, without taking a husband as her master. Her power base is somewhat precarious, as the Senine noblemen are both powerful and reluctant to support a female monarch.
