The County of Terrumides

This damp, marshy county is the southernmost in Avation. It is more recently settled than most of Avation, rendered inhabitable by recent advances in plowing and irrigation. The county is relentlessly flat and wet, and frequently boggy. Large tidal flats lie to the south, and most of its coastline lacks good harbours. Cloying mists frequently lay a shroud over the land.

The county used to have a cheery, enterpeneurical ambience. Now, Terrumides is a dying land. Many believe that it gives off malign vapours, hence its fate during the maggot-sickness - The county lost four inhabitants out of every ten. After this, people started fleeing the county, but this outflowing was curbed by Arch-Duke's system of letters-of-passage. Some still flee illegally, heading across the eastern bay to the Crown's lands. The ravages of pirates and orcs have struck the weakened county heavily, and its inhabitants are despairing. A rebellion last year was crushed resolutely, a thousand men were hanged in a single week, the ring-leaders boiled and dismembered in public.

Count Darion of Terrumides has been accused of having as much personality as a pound of soap. He implements the Arch-Duke's edicts mechanically, showing neither like nor dislike.
