The Valsangés

Back to Valsangé

The formal head of the Valsangé family is Baron Ariste Senior, veteran of many battles but weary of years and not entirely lucid anymore. Most of his duties have been taken over by Baronet Chrysale, his eldest son.

Baronet Chrysale is considered to be a dutiful and soft-spoken man.A wiry and weathered nobleman of average height, grey-haired, dark-eyed and battlescarred, his physique has been expanded the last couple of years by a growing beer gut.

The Baronet is assisted by his wife, the Baronette Bélisa, a strong-minded and matronly woman born to the Flonde family of Hamvalle. Belisa's full figure has grown ever fuller since they married, her auburn hair has faded and its natural colour been replaced by henna, but the fire in her grey eyes has not faded at all.

The heir and his wife have three children, Ariste Jr., Chrysalia and Chrysabella. The two older have inherited the auburn hair of their mother, while Chrysabella has darker hair, like her father. All three are grey-eyed like their mother.

Ariste Jr. is a stout young man who was fostered by his grandfather, the Baron of Flonde. He seems to have inherited his father's quiet temperament, as well as martial ability from both family lines. He is known as a competent but reluctant troubadour.

Chrysalia is a true belle, her beauty is already the subject of several mediocre ballads, but she has a most unruly and unconventional personality, and is given to scandalous trekking in the wilderness, unsuitable for any woman, not to mention one of her birth.

Chrysabella is less striking but more curvaceous than her older sister, and far more feminine, she has recently returned from her fostering at the court of the Count of Tartor, for unknown reasons.

As the Baron has grown increasingly feeble, the other four of the "five families" of Valsangé, all of whom are closely related to the Baronial family, have increasingly taken it upon themselves to assist the Baronet in the governance of the barony. These are the bannerets of Blanc-Valsangé, Iuven-Valsangé , Monts-Valsangé and Rupture-Valsangé.

Banneret Albin de Blanc-Valsangés is known as the "thin white banneret", he is a pale and white-haired man in his 40s, known to be perfectly courteous and utterly callous. While no one trifles with him, his chilly demeanour has kept many client knights from his family. His family holds the land near the Old Bridge.

Banneret Constantine-Auguste de Iuven-Valsangé, a jovial man in his 50s, is on the other hand known for having a kind word and a helping hand for all the knights of the barony. His patronal diligence has made his family at least as powerful as the Blanc-Valsangés. The majority of the family's holdings and supporters are in the southern part of the Barony.

Banneret Olivier de Monts-Valsangé is in his late 50s with a kind and youthful visage. More of a listener than a speaker, he is seen as the least ambitious family head, supporting others rather than making propositions of his own. His family holds land mainly in the east, near the mountains of Tibellu.

Banneret Boreion de Rupture-Valsangé is the oldest family head (apart from Ariste Sr. himself). He is in his sixties, fully bearded and somewhat savage of guise. Boreion is an old protegé of Ariste Senior, and is gruffly avuncular to the Baronet. His family holds land close to the Witch Cauldron.
