Les Champs-Verdants

The baillage of Champs-Verdants centers on a river which flows from the Great Forest to the harbour of Ersis.

The margravate of Chamsverdant is known to the Dorish people as Greenfields.

Les Champs-Verdants are wet and foggy. Between the mountains inland and the coastal showers, the district sees more days of rain than not. On the bright side, winters are generally mild, at least in the lowlands, and snow is rare. The mild, humid weather means that rot is a constant annoyance in the district, particularily to crops.

People have mockingly claimed that this district consists only of rock and peat, and it is true that it has more wasteland than just about any other Avatine baillage, with large areas of marshland, lakes and boulder fields. In between however, are the verdant fields for which the margravate is named.

Champs-Verdants' agriculture has adjusted to the climate. All attempts at growing wheat have failed, but oats do well and barley passably so. On the bright side, pasturage is excellent, and the district has a lot of dairy cattle (as well as a modest tradition for horsebreeding), the "Verdant wheels" (cheeses rolled in greenish wax) are consumed all over Avation, and beyond. Furthermore, the people of Les Champs-Verdants brew dark, bitter beer after the Dorish tradition, to console themselves against the relentless rain. The district also has many shepherds, and the inland nobles make much of their money from wool sales.

The inhabitants of Les Champs-Verdants are of mixed Dorish and Frankish stock. Approximately one third speak only Dorish, and as many are at least partly bilingual.

Ersis

The major settlement closest to the Dorannic border, Ersis is heavily fortified, but despite the danger of invasion by mercenaries or soldiers from the Civil war, the armed presence has been neglected in the recent bad times. A port with great traditions for whaling and fishing.
