Cargandom and beyond

Cargandom is the land formerly ruled by the august Cargan Empire, sometimes called the Old Empire. Cargandom was united for centuries, and still has a lot of common ground culturally. Cargan is used as an international language of diplomacy and learning, and the local languages are derived from or heavily influenced by it.

The people of Avation, Pacar, Algica, Logesia and Giquella speak Frankish, while those living in Senion, Hesperia, Nardigena, Sarigol and Vacidonia speak a variant of the same language, called Clementian.

Cargandom is spread over two continents, centred on the Mare Interior - The Inner Sea - a sea girdled on the northern and southern side by landmasses, but connected to oceans to the east and west by narrow straits. Along the northern coast of the Mare Interior, the climate is temperate, while to the south it is quite warm.

The landmass to the North of the Mare Interior is the western end of a continent known as the Terra Borealis. The southwestern end is divided between the Free Kingdoms, to the east of these lie the main holdings of the Confederacy of Sorcerers, and further east still the Bôthic Principalities and the northernmost remaining province of the Cargan Empire, Bôtheria.

Scroll below the map to learn of the lands on the continent south of the Mare Interior - Terra Centralis, as well as the lands beyond Cargandom to the east, south and west.

Terra Centralis (Centralia/Omphalia)

South of the Mare Interior are two great empires - the Clemencian Great Kingdom, and the Cargan Empire. These lie on the northern side of the Terra Centralis - the central continent.

South of the Clemencian land lie the Shahdoms of Haram, hot and arid realms. The Shahdom of Haram is the southernmost land to have direct contact with Cargandom. The Haramesh bring goods from more distant lands, such as Zanzibar and the Occident.

In the inland waste, positioned between the Shahdoms of the Haramesh, the Cargan Empire and the Clemencian Kingdoms, lies the Goblin realm, ruled by savage goblin horsemen, who raid the surrounding empires whenever they perceive an opportunity.

The western coasts of the two continents of Terra Borealis and Terra Centralis are known collectively as the Shattered Coast., It is lapped at by the Ocean of Lost Souls. Both of the dramatic names stem from the end of the Fifth Age, when the coast was shattered by earthquakes and floodwaves accompanying the sinking of the realm of Avalon, a mythical realm in the west. Now, in the 6589th year of the Sixth Age, the earth is still.

Eastern Borealis

The eastern Terra Borealis is considered remote and barbarous by the lands circling the Mare Interior. The Old Empire of the Cargans established a colony east of the Fair Oceans, but otherwise, there is nothing that could be linked to Cargandom. The uncouth Menschem kingdoms of Fraegings and Moraths strive against Cimmerians, dwarves, goblins, trolls, ogres, giants and other monstrous humanoids. Beyond these petty realms, there is naught but savage inhumans. Reputedly, beyond all these tribes of savages one finds Auroralia, the fabled realm of dawn.

Southern Centralis

To the south of Haram and the Goblin Realm lies the vast and sandy Great Desert. This arid wasteland is rumoured to house Irem, the oldest city of the world, and the Omphalos - a great stone spire rising at the centre of the world.

Beyond the Great Desert llies the steaming hot realm of Ifrigia, where men have skin blacker than that of goblins. Athrahasites and Antediluvians are found here.

Terra Occidentalis (the Occident)

Across the Ocean of Lost Souls, countless miles to the west, lies the Occident, with a thousand jewelled palaces. The Occident lies on the world's western border, at the foot of the mountains girdling the world's disk.

The Occident is known through legends and tall tales, rather than fact. Many precious trade goods come from the continent, such as tea, spices, silk, cotton, porcelain and gems. The carbuncle, most precious and rare of all gemstones, comes from somewhere in the Occident.

The only part of the Occident which is known through more or less reliabls sources is the vast realm of Bakari, which some Haramesh merchants claim to have visited. The land is said to be very hot and humid, and filled with all manner of strange monsters, such as the fire-breathing tygre and the improbable elephant. It is said that the secret of magic came from Bakari to the east, in ancient times. It is also said that Bakari is the homeland of the fairies, and that they go here in the daytime.

It is said that the fell land of Magog lies here. This is the empire of giants, ancient beyond compare, and it is said that at the end of the world, they will come out in force to fight all of humanity.

Tales also tells of the empire of Anomia, the Empire of the Sunset. It is said that people here ride dragons and elephants, and that their wealth is incomparable.
