The Picaresque

Chapter II

Midsummer's Long Night

After sliding down a slope without substantial injury (apart from the loss of some possessions, including Bertrand's crossbow) the companions managed to relocate Gaudrams, whom they laborously extracted from a sinkhole, abeit without boots. Fleeing from their unseen pursuers, the characters made their way through a marshy valley, finding an empty streambed covered in white gravel. They followed this furrow out of the marshland and into lush and fragrant open woodland. It was not until they reached a dried-up waterfall that Cornelius noticed the presence of three moons in the sky. He attributed this to odd atmospheric effects.

They found a winding path through open fir woods, and eventually came upon a clearing where a huge fire blazed, and lit a picnic of three remarkable personages, attended by white-clad pygmies. These personages were Serendipius, Maya and Bob.

They warmly welcomed the travelleres and wined and dined them. They furthermore told them that they were seeking the lost princess Roxanne, alternately portrayed by Serendipius as his cousin or his sister. All in all, Serendipius came across as a man with an incoherent story and highly variable accent.

Gradually, the characters began to suspect that their picnic hosts were not what they seemed.
