The Picaresque

Chapter I, Skerpla, 6589

02.06, Earthday

The three knights entered into The Horn's Discipline Monastery to repent their lack of gravitas and other sins.

06.07, Aetherday

Disillusioned with his cousin's and their liege's gloomy ways, the young Sieur Jacques-Alphonse escapes from the monastery at evening prayers.

He seizes the horse Apricot from a local banneret, flees all night his horse swimming across the border to Dalmé,

07.07, Moonday

In the morning he claims some food from a peasant family, and sleeps through the noon hours hidden in a small grove.

In the evening, Jacques-Alphonse arrives at the village of Mort de Trois Dernier, seeking solace at the local tavern. Here he meets the journeyman jeweller Bertrand, and his erstwhile employee the scholar Cornelius.

08.07, Godsday

Sieur Jacques-Alphonse and Cornelius travel westwards. They are overtaken by the men of Sieur Brabantu, who take back the horse Apricot, but accept the cover story given by Cornelius. By early afternoon the two cross the river and obtain a temporary traveler's writ for Jacques-Alphonse, giving his identity as Simon, an apprentice of Cornelius.

After passing the bridge they travel further westwards. In the late afternoon they are overtaken by Bertrand.

The three head towards the "Swallow and Thumbelina Inn" in the village of Espe, where they proceed to have a fine meal, get to know a prelate and are told of Widow Amalon, her refusal to re-marry, and her disagreements with her brother-in-law the smith. They get mightily drunk and attempt to steal the smith's anvil. Bertrand hurts his left foot.

09.07, Airday

The prelate Titus alerts them to the smith's grievance, and helps them settle it out of court. With much ado, Bertrand's boot is removed (and cut apart). Cornelius concludes that the foot is afflicted with cancer. They rest..

10.07, Earthday

The three travel slowly towards Usur.

11.07, Fireday

In the evening, they reach Usur. Bertrand is pickpocketed (presumably) at the gate, a cripple is suspected and interrogated. The two bureaucrats Maugis (thin and genial) and Valentain (fat and dour) question the travellers, and "Simon"'s status as a student is found highly irregular. They seek solace at The Mirror. Cornelius argues with Candidate Gaius Sapientus.

12.07, Waterday

Cornelius and "Simon" go shopping for clothes. Bertrand gets a second opinion on his foot, along with treatment and purgatories. He has strange personal experiences.

Cornelius is accosted by the University's representatives (Candidate Gaius Paracelus and the local leader, Professor Herminius, as well as two of Herminius's students) accused of heresy and of violating the guild code by taking a student while still but a Candidate himself. After some discussion, the University representatives threaten Cornelius with maces and chase him. "Simon" toss Bertrand's enemna at them, and Cornelius makes good his escape while they are still stunned with surprise. The two students are tasked with catching "Simon" but he easily eludes them and makes a dashing escape. After some wine and conversation at a local artisan tavern, they carefully return to The Mirror.

Bertrand seems to have taken temporarily leave of his wits, and his room is in a great disarray. The room's chest is rattling slightly, and a great amethyst-like gem rolls on its lid. "Simon" palms the gem and checks the chest, but finds naught but suggestions of a presence. Cornelius quarrel with Yon, who will not have his master moved needlessly, nor obey Cornelius. After paying for damages, they leave. "Simon" is quartered at a cheap inn away from Inn Street, and Cornelius seeks the Tarry Tail's hospitality. Cornelius ventures into the Rats' Warrens and finds a certain Doctor "Brandy" Amandus, whom agrees to duplicate the letter of passage for three pistoles.

"Simon" meets and talk to three tumblers - Jacques, Jacqueline and Simon.

Near sunset, B (and Y), JA, G and Cy leave through the city gates., and goes to the Alchemist's tower, where they find a shoeless and penniless Cornelius.
